What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implant
Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically inserted directly into your jaw. These posts then fuse to the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. The posts act like prosthodontic tooth roots, providing much-needed stimulation to the jawbone. Dental implants are then paired with restorations such as dentures, crowns, and dental bridges to restore oral function and allow you to eat and speak properly. These restorations are secured to the implant via an abutment, providing maximum stability.

Why Choose Dental Implants Over Traditional Prosthetics?

A Lifelong Investment

With the proper dental care, implants can last 40 years or longer. Your restoration may need to be replaced occasionally, but the titanium implants themselves can provide a lifetime of benefits.

Retain Your Jawbone

Losing teeth causes the jawbone to atrophy, giving your face a sunken appearance. Implants prevent jawbone atrophy by stimulating bone growth in the jaw.

Better Function

Traditional dentures can easily slip out of place when you speak or eat. Dentures anchored by implants won't move, whether you're biting into a crisp apple or chewing steak. Patients can eat a wide variety of foods without worrying about slippage.

The Advantages of Having a Prosthodontist

While general dentists are good at replacing a missing tooth, they may not have a wide range of restorative treatments. A prosthodontist is a dentist who specializes in prostheses and working with missing teeth.

As a prosthodontist, Dr. Casagrande has significant experience fitting crowns, bridges, dentures, implants, and other restorative solutions. Using high-quality materials and the latest technology, Dr. Casagrande can deliver a prosthetic that will blend in with your natural teeth and enhance your smile.

A missing tooth can cause embarrassment, as well as difficulty chewing and speaking. While traditional prosthetics will fill in the gaps in your teeth, they lack the strong functionality that comes with dental implants.

As a specialist in prosthodontics, Dr. Casagrande will create a comfortable implant-supported restoration that is secure and matches your natural tooth. The titanium posts provide a lifetime of benefits, eliminating the need for bone grafts and other dentistry treatments.

Hands down Dr. Casagrande is the finest prosthodontist I have ever encountered! I've had full implants since the early 2000s. I experienced multiple broken screws, cracked bridges and failed implants. Until I started working with Dr. Casagrande I realized I'd never had a partner relationship with other providers. Dr. Casagrande (and his team) are very caring and supportive people. I now have teeth that look very natural, my lips are fuller, and my husband told me he loves my new smile!

Bone-Saving Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are the only restorative dentistry procedure that can stop and prevent jawbone atrophy.

Though stability of your restoration is important, the bone-saving benefits of dental implants are quite possibly one of the most important advantages. When your jawbone loses the stimulation your tooth root once provided, it begins to deteriorate. If left untreated, you could require bone grafting later.

For those who already suffer from bone loss, bone grafting may be required before you can proceed with traditional dental implants. However, some patients may benefit from All-on-4® dental implants, which use four implants placed at strategic angles to maximize the remaining bone structure and stop further atrophy.

Do You Have Significant Tooth Loss? Consider All-On-4 Dental Implants

All-on-4 Dental Implants

Why Patients Prefer All-on-4

Faster Treatment

Placing a traditional implant requires separate surgeries to place the titanium implant and the abutment. Each phase requires its own healing period. All-on-4 dentures negate the need for multiple healing periods. After surgery at our Billings, MT dental office patients leave with a full arch of functional teeth.

Better Stability

All-on-4 holds your denture in place, giving you better stability when eating and speaking. While traditional dentures can be slippery and reposition unexpectedly, All-on-4 functions similarly to your natural teeth.

No Need for Preparation

Placing titanium posts requires patients have a specific minimum of tissue in their jawbone. With All-on-4 dentures, patients with low jawbone density can get a new set of teeth without having to undergo a bone grafting procedure.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants have life-changing results, improving your ability to eat and speak. Dr. Casagrande combines his cosmetic dentistry knowledge with his restorative dentistry experience, giving patients natural-looking replacements.

Consultation

Your teeth and health history will be reviewed by Dr. Casagrande. If you meet the criteria and they align with your goals, your dental implant surgery will be scheduled for the near future.

Implant Surgery

We offer our patients sedation options to help ensure their comfort during surgery. Local anesthesia is applied to the treatment site before small incisions are made into the gums. The titanium post is placed into the gums using precise surgical guides, and then sutured shut.

Healing Period

During the first healing period, the titanium post begins to fuse with your jawbone. This recovery period can last four to six months.

Abutment Placement

During your second surgery, an abutment is connected to the implant. The abutment is used to connect your replacement tooth to the implant.

Additional Healing Period

After the abutment is attached to the dental implant, a second healing period is necessary.

Attaching the Restoration

Once the gum tissue around the abutment heals, Dr. Casagrande will attach a denture, crown, or bridge. The prosthetic will match the color and shape of your natural tooth.

The process of placing implants and attaching prosthetics takes several months. Before the final crown, bridge or denture is applied, patients typically receive a temporary restoration. While this treatment takes longer to complete than traditional options, implant-supported prosthetics are the closest alternative to natural teeth.

Is Dental Implant Surgery Painful?

All surgeries come with some level of discomfort and a healing period. Pain during dental implant surgery can be greatly minimized with general anesthesia and IV sedation.

If the thought of oral surgery causes dental anxiety, sedation can keep you unconscious while Dr. Casagrande places your implants. The risks involving anesthesia are very small and our team is specially trained to address any complications that may arise.

Hear From a Patient

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

We look forward to answering all of your questions in person, but until the time of your appointment, we have provided answers to some of the most common questions about dental implants:

Does insurance cover dental implants?

Basic insurance plans contribute to the cost of crowns, bridges, and dentures, as well as any preparatory procedures you need, such as gum disease treatment or tooth extraction. But when it comes to the implants and abutments, basic dental insurance rarely applies. Our Billings team will work directly with your provider to maximize your coverage. We also work with CareCredit® and LendingClub®, two medical lenders who can allow you to pay for your treatment in affordable, low-interest installments.

Do brushing and flossing become less important if I receive full implant-supported dentures on both arches?

Not at all. Sure, your natural teeth have now been completely replaced by titanium and porcelain, but the foundation of your smile—your gums and jawbone—remain as vulnerable as ever to buildup. Since your implants rely on these tissues for support, it remains crucial to brush twice and floss at least once daily. You will also need to visit us for checkups every six months.

How long can I expect my implants and restorations to last?

By taking great care of your smile through daily hygiene and regular dental visits, the implants themselves could last 40 years or longer. However, restorations (crowns, bridges, and dentures) have a shorter lifespan, usually about 15 years. During your regular visits to our office, we will monitor the condition of your implants and restorations to make sure they are in excellent condition. If they are showing signs of wear, our Billings practice can determine when and how they should be replaced.
